Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on phone as leads show the National Democratic Alliance leading in Bihar, sources have said. Mr Kumar’s Janata Dal United is a partner of the NDA in the state where votes are still being counted.
Mr Kumar’s Janata Dal United is behind in several seats. The NDA, however, has galloped past the halfway mark in the 243-member assembly.
Though details of what Mr Shah discussed with Mr Kumar is not clear, election watchers are closely keeping an eye on the future of Mr Kumar if his party’s performance is not solid in the election.
“The BJP central leadership had given a commitment before the polls that Nitish Kumar would be chief minister irrespective of the number of seats the alliance partners win,” Janata Dal United or JDU principal general secretary KC Tyagi told NDTV.
